This week, our home was filled with extra excitement as we welcomed the wonderful Pet Pals back to our home.

An Afternoon of Smiles

There is something magical about the bond between humans and animals. This visit was particularly special, featuring a delightful mixture of fluffy chicks and gentle baby lambs. Our residents had the opportunity to:

• Hold and stroke the animals, providing a calming, tactile experience.
• Bottle-feed the lambs, which sparked wonderful memories of rural life and childhood pets.
• Watch the chicks explore, bringing a sense of springtime joy and wonder to the room.

A Festive Look Back and a Bright New Year at Pentlands Nursing Home

The team at Pentlands Nursing Home wishes you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

As we step into 2026, we’ve been reflecting on the wonderful memories made over the last few months. At Pentlands, we believe that a vibrant activities calendar is the heartbeat of our community. Staying active and social is incredibly important for our residents; it promotes cognitive health, boosts emotional well-being, and ensures that every day is filled with purpose and laughter.

Here is a look back at some of the highlights that made the end of the year so special at Pentlands.

Unforgettable Guests and Animal Antics

Our residents are always happy to meet and greet animal visitors, but our recent guest was truly unique! We welcomed a sheep to the home, and the sight of a sheep wearing nappies had residents and relatives in stitches. It isn’t every day you see a farm animal dressed for the lounge, and the laughter it sparked was the best medicine.

A Symphony of Music and Performance

Music has a magical way of bringing people together, and we’ve had some incredible talent through our doors recently:

New Voices: We welcomed a new singer, Anna, whose performance was a huge hit. We can’t wait to have her back.
The Golden Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll: Our Elvis impersonator brought a high-energy performance that had everyone tapping their feet and singing along to the classics.
The Bright Sound of Brass: Trumpeter Geoff treated us to a soulful and stirring performance, filling our home with beautiful melodies.
Community Harmonies: The Sing Well Choir visited us, proving that there is nothing quite as uplifting as the power of many voices raised in song.

Getting Creative in the Kitchen

Activities at Pentlands aren’t just about being entertained; they’re about getting stuck in! We recently held a Cheese Straw Making workshop. This hands-on session was a fantastic way for residents to engage their senses, from the feel of the dough to the delicious aroma of baking cheese wafting through the home. Plus, the best part was definitely the taste test at the end.

Shine Night Walk for Cancer Research UK – Update

Team from homes across the South Coast Nursing Homes group complete walking Half Marathon in aid of Cancer Research UK

Our intrepid team made up of eight colleagues from four of our homes; Fernbank, Pentlands, Rookwood and White Lodge successfully completed the 13 mile Shine Night Walk course, in aid of Cancer Research UK.

On Saturday 20th September the team travelled to London, not only to face a grueling walk but also the difficulties of train strikes but still went out and completed the challenge in style. Not only did they smash the distance at a canter they also raised a massive £2200 for a fantastic cause for their grit and determination whilst putting in the hard yards.

In fact, although it was originally meant to be a 13 mile walk through the streets of London at night, the train strikes and then difficulty getting out of Battersea Park meant they eventually racked up 23 miles! The walk started at 21:20 and they finished at 02:30 on Sunday morning. Some of the team didn’t get back home until 06:30. I’m sure you’ll agree that they have achieved something very special and their efforts have raised valuable funds. We only hope they got to put their feet up when they did eventually make it back.

Over a century of life-changing research

Cancer Research UK was formed more than 20 years ago, in 2002. However, their history goes back much further, to 1902, with the founding of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. Thanks to supporters like those who sponsored our SCNH team, their pioneering work into how to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer has benefitted millions of lives over the past 120 years.

The team are very proud to have raised so much for the cause and Emma Goldsmith, one of our Regional Operation Managers, said the team are already looking for volunteers to join them in 2026. See you at the start line!

SCNH Team to walk Shine Night Half Marathon

Teams at South Coast Nursing Homes have come together to walk Half Marathon in aid of Cancer Research UK

Staff from Fernbank, Pentlands, Rookwood and White Lodge alongside their Regional Operations Manager and Executive Housekeeper are embarking on their first night-time half marathon

All the team members have been juggling work and training as they prepare to take part in this epic challenge for a very worthy cause!

On Saturday 20^th September the team will travel up to London to complete in the Shine Night Walk.

The Shine Night Walk aims to raise money for Cancer Research UK. The team are busy training to walk the 13.1 miles across our Capital City over the summer.

The idea came about when thinking of ways to create some inter-home fun and to support a cause that had touched them all both personally and professionally.

If you are able to give anything at all for this important cause and support them, they’d be very grateful.

The teams challenge will begin and end at Battersea Park taking in Westminster and Waterloo en route. As the name suggests the walk takes place at night and the team will light up West London’s streets and support life-saving research. The half marathon route will see the team walking for between 5 and 7 hours, so it’s a massive challenge.

Pentlands New Year Events round up

Time flies when you’re having fun and that has certainly been the case for residents at our award-winning Nursing Home in Worthing, Pentlands. Over the last three months the activities team have kept the entertainment and events flowing.

Musical Entertainment

There’s always a musical vibe to get the body moving at Pentlands and visits from Elvis, Leila and Sarah on violin certainly got everyone in the party spirit. There was even a special Valentine’s Day performance from Leila, where staff and residents enjoyed the singing but also discussed what Love meant to them. Tommy our chef made special cupcakes, which everyone certainly loved.

Lunch Club

Every Wednesday and Friday residents gather to enjoy lunch club. A firm favourite is always the fish and chips, which are very good indeed.

Golden Wedding Celebration

In February we celebrated the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Wendie and Will. It was a surprise party arranged by the team, with dancing provided by Emily and a fantastic cake prepared by the catering team. Congratulations again Wendie and Will.

Cultural Exchange

Also in February was International Other Language Day. To celebrate Giedre, a member of our activities team, gave a presentation to residents and family members about Lithuania. The discussion covered language, history and culture. There was also a chance to try some Lithuanian Honey cake.

Pet Pals

A visit from Pet Pals is always a great time in the home. Interaction with animals is always a sure fire way to lift the spirits. It really helped bring in the Spring as we had Lambs and tiny chicks for the residents to hold and feed. Cute overload!

Winter Events and Activities at Pentlands

Winter Wonder

It’s been an incredibly busy time during the winter at Pentlands Nursing home in Worthing. Though the temperatures drop and the nights draw in, that doesn’t stop the brilliant team at Pentlands from putting on some great events and activities for our wonderful residents.

Harvest Service

Residents enjoyed the Harvest Service – kindly put on by one of our residents’ sons. Staff and relatives took part in some readings and sang songs. We also collected food parcels to give to our local food bank.

More stimulating than a coffee, it’s therapy Dog Mocha!

Mocha’s owner Rachel brings this beautiful therapy dog to the home nearly every month. Mocha is a pedigree Springer Spaniel, who comes from very good stock (her dad is a previous winners of Crufts). More than that though, she is incredibly friendly and gentle and our residents simply adore spending time with her. Judging by the tail wagging the feeling is mutual!

From therapy Dogs to therapy of the musical variety

Louis Armstrong once said that “Music is life itself” and it can certainly stir the soul and none more so than live music. That was certainly the case when Sarah visited to play the violin to a captivated group of our residents in the lounge. Many of them sat with their eyes closed, transported elsewhere by the music, while others sang along.

Cheese and Wine

In October residents and their families came together for our Cheese and Wine Tasting afternoon. Not only did we get to sample some wonderful cheeses, there was even a quiz to put their knowledge to the test. An educational as well as tasty way to spend an afternoon.

Arts and Crafts

At Pentlands we’re lucky to have a brilliantly creative group of residents who love to get stuck into all thing’s arts and crafts. Recently we’ve had a great time carving pumpkins and flower arranging. Not only is it a great way to let residents creative talents run free, it’s also a fantastic chance to work together as a team.

Oh yes they did…

In the build up to Christmas we were lucky enough to a theatre troupe come into the home and perform Red Riding Hood for the residents. It was a great way to spend the afternoon and the performers really did put on a show with plenty of audience participation. It certainly helped to kick off the Christmas period with a bang. Christmas 2025 at Berkeley Lodge, Fernbank and Pentlands

Christmas is a special time in all of our homes and 3 shining examples of that this year are Berkeley Lodge, Fernbank and Pentlands.

Berkeley Lodge

The festive spirit was clear for all to see at Berkely Lodge, our specialist Dementia Nursing Home in Worthing.

The team celebrated the season with a Christmas jumper day and made sure there was a bumper crop of Christmas related activities to keep our wonderful residents entertained.

A wonderful grotto was created in one of the lounges just in time for Father Christmas to pay a visit with a special gift for everyone.

The Christmas Party was also a huge success with live music once again provided by our resident Berkeley Band. The music didn’t end there as Abby Fell came in to sing Christmas carols.

As ever, our amazing catering team, did a magnificent job with a festive buffet.

Fernbank

Staff at our residential care home in Worthing, Fernbank were not to be outdone in the Christmas sartorial stakes as they too took part in their own Christmas jumper day. A more festive collection of pullovers you will not find I’m sure you’ll agree.

Residents also got take in a Christmas Pantomime, an annual event they all look forward to. This year it was Robin Hood and the reviews were glowing…Oh yes they were!

Pentlands

The team at our other Nursing Home in Worthing, Pentlands also pulled out all the stops for Christmas this year.

A brilliant Christmas fair kicked things off and the residents were kept busy making mince pies. The brilliant children from St John’s preschool visited the home for some carol singing. Some residents also took a trip to a local garden centre, which has become an annual tradition.

The very talented families of our residents also came in and provided entertainment in the shape of carol singing, Christmas songs and even some saxophone and flute playing.

The Carousel Theatre Company also visited to perform a pantomime based on Red Riding Hood.

It certainly was a busy time with some wonderful memories made.

We are extremely proud to announce that our home, Pentlands Nursing Home has been named Best Nursing Home in Worthing, 2023.

The team at Pentlands achieved an overall quality score in excess of 95%. As a group South Coast Nursing Homes are delighted that one of our homes has been recognised for the high level of care we provide.
