Spring At Berkeley Lodge

At our Nursing Home in Worthing, which specialises in helping people living with dementia, Berkeley Lodge, it has been busy this Spring, our residents have enjoyed a diverse programme of experiences that promote creativity, wellbeing, and connections.

This is just a sample of the amazing activities and entertainment that take place every day.

Easter

Easter wouldn’t be Easter without a little chocolate and for chocoholics what could be better than a chocolate bar workshop!  Residents also enjoyed a range of Easter themed sessions including decoration making which brought hands-on fun and seasonal joy to the home.

Tomorrow is always a day away…

Resident also got to enjoy a cultural outing to see Annie at the Worthing Pavilion a wonderful chance for residents to enjoy some live theatre and reminisce together.  Did you know it’s nearly 50 years since the first Broadway production of Annie opened?

Sporting Memories

It wasn’t only musical memories which were sparked, Our Gent’s Club organised a visit to the Sporting Memories Club, encouraging conversation and connection through shared passions.  Events like this can be fantastic for people living with dementia, which Berkeley Lodge is a specialist home for.

Community Spirit

Members of the knit and Natter Club took part in community gathering at Worthing Library, exchanging skills and stories with local residents.  It’s important to us that all our homes feel rooted in the local community and that are residents feel part of that.

The Food explorer’s club revisited traditional spring recipes, with residents preparing dishes from their own heritage and family traditions.

Creativity and Green Fingers

At the Art-ful Pottery Café, residents showcased their creativity while enjoying cream tea in a relaxed setting.

One of the most celebrated feature of our home is the garden, which is shared with one of other nursing homes, The Poets.  Recently the Joyful Green’s Club, started growing our own strawberries, herbs, succulents, and seasonal flowers offering a rewarding sensory experience, and promoting wellbeing through nature.

Christmas is a special time in all of our homes and 3 shining examples of that this year are Berkeley Lodge, Fernbank and Pentlands.

Berkeley Lodge

The festive spirit was clear for all to see at Berkely Lodge, our specialist Dementia Nursing Home in Worthing.

The team celebrated the season with a Christmas jumper day and made sure there was a bumper crop of Christmas related activities to keep our wonderful residents entertained.

A wonderful grotto was created in one of the lounges just in time for Father Christmas to pay a visit with a special gift for everyone.

The Christmas Party was also a huge success with live music once again provided by our resident Berkeley Band.  The music didn’t end there as Abby Fell came in to sing Christmas carols.

As ever, our amazing catering team, did a magnificent job with a festive buffet.

South Coast Nursing Homes, Summer time and the living is…

Summer garden parties are something of an institution at South Coast Nursing Homes and this year was no different with garden parties happening across all our homes in Sussex, below is just a flavour of the brilliant events our homes put on.

Sunshine in the Garden at Abundant Grace

Everyone celebrated summer in style at our nursing home in East Sussex, Abundant Grace.  There was music, dancing and laughter in ‘abundance’ all enhanced by a big helping of sunshine.  Not to be outshone the catering team did an amazing job to provide a fantastic spread.  It was a hugely successful way to celebrate the summer and bring everyone together not just residents and staff but relatives too.

Teamwork in Worthing

The shared gardens between our homes in Worthing, Berkeley Lodge and the Poets, looked resplendent in the sunshine for their summer garden party.  It was a chance for residents, staff and relatives of both homes to come together for fun in the sun.  There was musical accompaniment, balloons, bunting and smiles as far as the eye could see.  The amazing teams at both homes certainly pulled out all the stops to make sure everyone had a great time.  The one thing they couldn’t’ guarantee was the weather but thankfully they were blessed with blue skies.

Elegant Eastridge Manor

This year’s summer fete at Eastridge Manor our dementia specialist nursing home in Bolney, was a sun kissed triumph.  Alongside the band, there was a bouncy castle, circus skills training, classic cars and of course a raffle.  Truly something for everyone.  The grounds which wrap around the nursing home looked picture perfect and everyone had a fabulous time.  Friends, relatives, staff and residents enjoyed an afternoon filled with laughter and fun.  Food was supplied fresh from the BBQ and lovingly prepared by our Executive Chef Langton Mavuka.  The entire team at Eastridge worked so hard and did a wonderful job to create a day full of memories.

Language Learning at Berkeley Lodge Nursing Home, Worthing

At Berkeley Lodge Nursing Home in Worthing a new in-house basic foreign language tutorial course called “¿Hola Amigos?” has been rolled out. Activities Lead, Melliza Malonzo Marcos, led the Spanish class, while our very own Jean Hertz began offering French lessons and Sylvia Perschke, German. This initiative has been a stimulating addition to our monthly activities.  The beginner group is steadily growing with relatives’ participation too

Berkeley Lodge Nursing Home Fundraising

At South Coast Nursing Homes we want to ensure that our homes feel rooted in the local community, where our residents can interact with and feel part of that community.  A great example of this came at our nursing home in Worthing, Berkeley Lodge recently.  Lennox Children’s Cancer Fund reached out to the home about the possibility of working together.

The brilliant activities team at the home, which specialises in caring for people living with dementia, jumped straight into action and a plan was formulated.

The concept of the event was “Shower People with Love” and took place in our Music Lounge.  Entertainment was to be provided by our very own, and brilliantly talented, Berkeley Band/Choir.  The band are comprised of SCNH team members; Fernando Marcos on guitar/ lead vocals, Reymarte Gallo on back-up vocals and Melliza Malonzo Marcos on drums.  There also relatives of two of our residents in the band Tina Feeston on the piano and Sue Elphick on back-up vocals, along with Brad Billson on Bass.  As a band they provided the day with some beautiful music.

Support also came in the shape of the Catering team, led by Executive Chef Langton Mavuka, who provided tea, coffee and treats.  Donations were made for the drinks along with the raffle which also helped raise money for the charity.  A wonderful £197.23 was raised along with awareness in the wider community of the important work that the Lennox Children’s Cancer Trust do.

Congratulations to everyone involved for creating a great day and for all the hard work that goes into events such as these.
